Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic principles of road safety, including how to cross the street safely, the importance of traffic signals, and how to be aware of their surroundings while walking or biking near roads.

Materials and Prep

  • Open space for activities (like a backyard or nearby park)
  • Chalk or tape to create a mock road and crosswalk
  • Traffic sign templates (can be drawn on paper)
  • Simple first-aid kit (optional, for learning about safety)
  • Water bottle for hydration during activities

Before the lesson, ensure the area is safe for activities and that the student understands basic road signs and signals.

Activities

  • Mock Road Setup:

Create a mock road using chalk or tape. Include lanes, a crosswalk, and traffic signs. The student can practice walking along the road, stopping at the crosswalk, and waiting for the "traffic light" to change.

  • Traffic Sign Matching Game:

Draw or print out various traffic signs and have the student match them with their meanings. For example, they can match a stop sign with the action of stopping.

  • Safety Scenarios:

Present different road situations (e.g., a car approaches a crosswalk, a bike rider is near a busy street) and ask the student what they should do in each scenario. This helps them think critically about road safety.

  • First Aid Basics:

Introduce simple first-aid concepts related to road safety. Discuss what to do if someone gets hurt and show them how to use a band-aid on a pretend injury.

Talking Points

  • "Why do we need to stop at a red light?" - This helps the student understand the rules of traffic signals.
  • "What should you do before crossing the street?" - Encourage them to think about looking left and right for cars.
  • "What does a stop sign mean?" - Discuss the importance of stopping and being cautious.
  • "How can we be safe when riding a bike?" - Talk about wearing helmets and following road rules.
  • "Why is it important to pay attention when near roads?" - Emphasize being aware of surroundings and potential dangers.
  • "What should you do if you see a car coming?" - Reinforce the idea of stopping and waiting for the car to pass.
  • "How can we help others be safe on the road?" - Discuss the importance of looking out for friends and family.
  • "What would you do if someone got hurt?" - Teach them the basics of seeking help and using first-aid if necessary.
