Objective

By the end of this lesson, the Kindergarten student will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts in the context of baking.

Materials and Prep

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • A mixing bowl
  • A baking tray
  • Ingredients for a simple recipe (e.g., flour, sugar, butter)
  • An oven
  • A recipe book or printed recipe
  • Prior knowledge of counting and recognizing numbers

Activities

  1. Counting Ingredients: Have the student count the number of cups or spoons of each ingredient required for the recipe. For example, if the recipe calls for 2 cups of flour, ask the student to count out and pour 2 cups of flour into the mixing bowl.

  2. Measuring Ingredients: Teach the student how to properly measure ingredients using the measuring cups and spoons. Show them how to level off the ingredients for accurate measurements. Let them measure out the required amounts of each ingredient for the recipe.

  3. Mixing and Dividing: Once all the ingredients are measured, guide the student in mixing them together in the mixing bowl. Explain the concept of dividing the mixture evenly into portions, such as dividing the dough into equal-sized balls for cookies.

  4. Baking and Timing: Preheat the oven and help the student place the baking tray with the prepared dough or batter into the oven. Discuss the importance of following the baking time mentioned in the recipe and waiting patiently for the baked goods to be ready.

  5. Counting and Sharing: Once the baked goods are ready, help the student count and divide them into equal portions. Discuss the concept of sharing and how each person can have an equal number of treats.

Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • "We need to count the cups and spoons of ingredients we need for our recipe. Let's count together!"
  • "Now let's use the measuring cups and spoons to measure the right amounts of each ingredient. Remember to level off the ingredients for accurate measurements."
  • "When we mix all the ingredients together, we need to divide the mixture into equal portions. Can you show me how to divide it?"
  • "We will put our mixture in the oven and wait for it to bake. We need to follow the baking time mentioned in the recipe. Let's set a timer!"
  • "After our baked goods are ready, we will count them and divide them equally. It's important to share with others, just like we learned in school!"
