Objective
By the end of this lesson, Mason will be able to identify and practice key communication skills, understand the importance of body language, and engage in conversations effectively with others.
Materials and Prep
- Notebook and pen or pencil for note-taking
- A timer (can use a phone or clock)
- Space for role-playing activities
- Optional: A mirror for practicing body language
Before the lesson, it's helpful to think about a few scenarios where Mason might want to use his communication skills, like talking to a friend, asking a question in class, or introducing himself to someone new.
Activities
- Role-Playing Conversations:
Mason will pair up with you to practice different conversation scenarios. Each will take turns being the speaker and the listener. Use various topics like "introducing yourself," "asking for help," or "making plans with a friend." This will help him gain confidence in speaking and listening.
- Body Language Charades:
In this fun twist on charades, Mason will act out different emotions or situations using only body language, while you guess what he is trying to express. This will help him understand how non-verbal cues play a role in communication.
- Conversation Starters:
Mason will brainstorm a list of conversation starters that he can use in different situations. Then, practice using them in a mock conversation, focusing on making eye contact and using an engaging tone of voice.
Talking Points
- "Did you know that most of what we communicate is not just words? It's also our body language!"
- "When you're listening, it’s important to show that you’re paying attention. Nodding your head or saying 'I see' helps the other person know you care about what they’re saying."
- "Practicing with role-playing makes it easier to talk to real people. The more you practice, the more confident you’ll feel!"
- "Using conversation starters can help break the ice. It’s like having a key to open the door to a new conversation!"
- "Remember, everyone makes mistakes when they talk. What matters is how you respond and keep the conversation going!"
