Objective
By the end of this lesson, Mason will understand the basic biology of dogs, including their anatomy, senses, and behavior. He will also learn how to care for a dog and why dogs are considered "man's best friend."
Materials and Prep
- Notebook and pencil for notes and drawings
- Access to a computer or tablet for research (if available)
- Dog-related books or articles (if available)
- Space to draw or create a poster
- Time to talk about and interact with a dog (if available)
Before the lesson, make sure to gather any dog-related materials you might have at home. If you have a dog, think about how you can incorporate them into the lesson!
Activities
- Dog Anatomy Drawing: Mason will draw a simple diagram of a dog, labeling parts like the ears, tail, paws, and nose. This will help him understand dog anatomy.
- Dog Senses Exploration: Discuss how dogs use their senses. Mason can try to guess how a dog perceives the world by closing his eyes and using his other senses to identify objects.
- Dog Care Plan: Mason will create a care plan for a dog, including feeding, exercise, and grooming. This will teach him responsibility and the needs of a pet.
- Fun Facts about Dogs: Mason will research and write down 5 fun facts about dogs that he didn't know before. This will encourage curiosity and learning.
- Role-Playing as a Dog Trainer: Mason can pretend to be a dog trainer, teaching a "dog" (which could be a stuffed animal) basic commands like sit, stay, and roll over.
Talking Points
- "Did you know that dogs have an incredible sense of smell? They can detect scents up to 100,000 times better than humans!"
- "Dogs are social animals, which means they love to be around people and other dogs. This is why they make such great pets!"
- "What do you think are the most important things to remember when taking care of a dog? Let's make a list!"
- "Dogs communicate with us through their body language. Can you tell when a dog is happy or scared? Let's observe!"
- "Every dog has its own personality, just like people do. What kind of dog do you think would be your perfect match?"
