Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the concept of scientific inventions, explore how inventions impact their home and local community, and create a simple invention of their own using everyday materials found around the house.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencils for brainstorming and drawing ideas
  • Household items (like cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, rubber bands, etc.) for building inventions
  • Access to a computer or tablet (optional) for research on local inventions
  • Space to create and test inventions (like a table or a safe outdoor area)

Before the lesson, think about some inventions that you see every day in your home and community. This could be anything from a toaster to a bicycle!

Activities

  • Invention Brainstorming:

Start by brainstorming different inventions that you use daily. Write down at least five inventions and discuss how each one makes life easier or more fun.

  • Research Local Inventions:

If you have access to a computer or tablet, research some famous inventions that were created in your local community. Share your findings and discuss why those inventions are important.

  • Create Your Own Invention:

Using the materials you have at home, design and build your own invention! It could be a new toy, a tool to help with chores, or something completely unique. Draw your invention first, then create it!

  • Invention Presentation:

After creating your invention, present it to your family. Explain what it does, how it works, and why you think it’s a good invention. This will help you practice sharing your ideas!

Talking Points

  • "What is an invention? Can you think of something that was invented to help people?"
  • "Inventions can be simple or complex. What do you think makes a good invention?"
  • "How do you think inventions change the way we live? Can you give an example?"
  • "Let's think about some inventions in our home. What do you use every day that was invented?"
  • "Why do you think it’s important to invent new things? How does it help our community?"
  • "When you create your invention, think about who would use it and how it would help them!"
  • "Remember, every great inventor started with an idea. Your invention could be the next big thing!"
  • "Let’s celebrate your creativity! Every invention is special and has its own story."
