Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the concept of scientific inventions, explore how they impact our daily lives, and create their own simple invention using materials found at home. The student will also learn to appreciate the inventors in their local community.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for brainstorming and drawing ideas
  • Recyclable materials (like cardboard, plastic bottles, etc.) found at home
  • Scissors (with adult supervision)
  • Glue or tape for assembling inventions
  • A computer or tablet (optional) for research

Before the lesson, ensure that the student has a safe workspace to create their inventions. Discuss the importance of safety when using scissors or any other tools.

Activities

  1. Invention Exploration:

Start by discussing famous inventions and their inventors. Ask the student to pick one invention they find interesting and research a little about it. They can use a computer or tablet if available, or you can provide information. Create a small presentation about what they learned.

  2. Inventor's Diary:

The student will create a diary entry from the perspective of an inventor. They can write about their daily life, what problems they are trying to solve, and how they feel about their inventions. This activity encourages creativity and empathy.

  3. Build Your Invention:

Using the recyclable materials gathered, the student will design and build their own invention. Encourage them to think about a problem they want to solve in their home or community and how their invention can help. After building, they can present their invention to you.

  4. Local Inventors Research:

Have the student research local inventors or inventions that came from their community. They can create a poster or a digital slideshow about these inventors and their contributions.

  • "Inventions are created to solve problems. What problem do you think your invention will solve?"
  • "Did you know that many inventors started with just a simple idea? What idea do you have for your invention?"
  • "Researching about inventors helps us understand how creativity and science work together. Who is your favorite inventor?"
  • "Building your invention is like being a scientist! You get to test your ideas and see what works."
