Objective

By the end of this lesson, Alex will learn about the life cycle of a pumpkin, its different parts, and how pumpkins grow. Alex will also engage in fun activities to explore pumpkins creatively and scientifically.

Materials and Prep

  • One pumpkin (any size)
  • Paper and crayons or markers
  • A small bowl of water
  • Spoon (for scooping out pumpkin seeds)
  • Notebook or journal for writing observations

Before the lesson, make sure to find a pumpkin and have a safe space for the activities. Discuss with Alex how to handle the pumpkin carefully.

Activities

  • Pumpkin Exploration:

Start by examining the pumpkin. Alex can describe its color, shape, and texture. Encourage Alex to touch and feel the pumpkin's surface and compare it to other fruits or vegetables.

  • Seed Scooping:

Using a spoon, Alex can scoop out the seeds and pulp from the inside of the pumpkin. This is a great hands-on activity! Ask Alex to describe how it feels and what it looks like inside.

  • Drawing the Pumpkin Life Cycle:

On paper, Alex can draw the life cycle of a pumpkin, from seed to sprout to full-grown pumpkin. Explain each stage as Alex draws, making it a fun art project!

  • Water Experiment:

Fill a small bowl with water and place some of the pumpkin seeds in it. Discuss with Alex what happens to the seeds in water. This will help Alex understand how seeds need moisture to grow.
