Objective
By the end of this lesson, Matilda will understand what microgreens are, how they grow, and why they are important. She will also learn how to plant and care for her own microgreens at home!
Materials and Prep
- A small container (like a cup or a shallow dish)
- Soil or cotton balls
- Microgreen seeds (like radish, broccoli, or sunflower seeds)
- Water
- A sunny spot in the house
Before the lesson, ensure you have all materials ready and find a sunny spot where Matilda can place her microgreens to grow!
Activities
-
Introduction to Microgreens:
Start by explaining what microgreens are. Show Matilda pictures of different types of microgreens and discuss their colors and shapes.
-
Planting Time:
Help Matilda plant her microgreens. She can fill her container with soil or cotton balls, sprinkle the seeds on top, and gently water them. Talk about how seeds need soil, water, and sunlight to grow.
-
Daily Care:
Each day, Matilda can check on her microgreens, water them, and observe how they grow. Encourage her to keep a journal to draw or write about her observations.
-
Tasting Microgreens:
Once the microgreens are ready to eat, help Matilda taste them! Discuss how they can be used in salads or sandwiches and how they add flavor and nutrition.
