Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will create a fun face using different shapes cut from paper and glued together. You will learn to recognize different shapes and how they can be combined to make something new and exciting!

Materials and Prep

  • Colored paper (various colors)
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Pencil
  • Marker (optional for drawing details)

Before the lesson, make sure to have a clean workspace and all materials ready. Discuss with your student the different shapes they already know, like circles, squares, and triangles.

Activities

  • Shape Hunt: Start by going on a shape hunt around the house or outside. Look for objects that are different shapes, like round balls, square boxes, or triangle roofs. This will help you think about shapes in the real world!

  • Shape Cutting: Once you find some shapes, use the colored paper to cut out your own shapes. Make circles for eyes, triangles for noses, and rectangles for mouths. Remember, the more shapes you use, the more fun your face will be!

  • Face Assembly: Now it's time to glue your shapes together to create your face! Arrange the shapes on a piece of paper and glue them down. You can make silly faces, happy faces, or even funny monster faces!

  • Details and Decoration: After gluing your shapes, use the marker to add details like eyebrows, eyelashes, or even hair. Let your creativity shine!

Talking Points

  • "What shapes do you see around us? Can you find something that is a circle?"
  • "Let’s cut out some shapes! What shape do you want to start with?"
  • "Look at how we can use different shapes to make a face. What shape do you want to use for the eyes?"
  • "How many shapes did you use to make your face? Can you count them with me?"
  • "What if we added a triangle for a nose? How does that change the face?"
  • "Let’s think of a name for your face! What do you want to call it?"
