Objective
By the end of this lesson, Maximus will reinforce his understanding of shapes, prewriting readiness, reading readiness, and basic math skills. He will also learn about kindness through a fun story and enjoy outdoor play to enhance his physical development.
Materials and Prep
- Boat ride tracing worksheet
- Shapes flashcards (squares and triangles)
- Counting objects (like blocks or toys) for numbers 1-10
- Transportation sort cards (air, land, sea vehicles)
- SEL Kindness to Share from A to Z book
- Outdoor play equipment (trampoline, swings, slide)
Make sure to have a comfortable space for reading and activities, as well as a safe outdoor area for play.
Activities
-
Shape Exploration:
Use shapes flashcards to introduce Maximus to squares and triangles. Ask him to find objects around the house that match these shapes. Create a fun game where he has to jump every time he sees a square and clap for every triangle!
-
Prewriting Practice:
On the boat ride tracing worksheet, Maximus will practice drawing slant and curved lines. Encourage him to say the sounds of the letters M and X while he traces, reinforcing his reading readiness.
-
Counting Fun:
Using counting objects, Maximus will count from 1 to 10. You can create a mini scavenger hunt where he finds 10 items in the house or yard, counting them as he goes!
-
Transportation Sorting:
Using transportation sort cards, Maximus will categorize vehicles into air, land, and sea. Discuss each vehicle as he sorts them, asking questions like "Where does this go?" and "How does this travel?"
-
Story Time:
Read the book "Kindness to Share from A to Z." After reading, discuss with Maximus how he can show kindness in his daily life. You can even create a "kindness chart" to track his acts of kindness throughout the week!
-
Outdoor Play:
Let Maximus enjoy some time on the trampoline, swings, and slide. Encourage him to count how many times he can jump or swing, integrating physical activity with counting practice!
Talking Points
- "Can you find something in our house that is a square? How about a triangle?"
- "Let's trace these lines together! Can you say 'M' and 'X' while we trace?"
- "How many items do you have? Can you count them with me?"
- "What kind of vehicle is this? Does it fly, drive, or swim?"
- "What did you like about the story? How can we be kind today?"
- "Let's jump on the trampoline! How many jumps can you count?"
