Objective

By the end of this lesson, Chelsea will understand the basics of health and nutrition, learn about different food groups, and be able to identify healthy choices. She will also create a fun meal plan using her knowledge!

Materials and Prep

  • Health workbook
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Coloring materials (crayons or markers)
  • Printable food group chart (if possible, can be drawn by Chelsea)
  • Blank paper for meal planning
  • Timer or stopwatch (for fun activities)

Before the lesson, review the food groups and basic nutrition information from the health workbook. Make sure to have a comfortable workspace set up for Chelsea to engage in activities.

Activities

  • Food Group Scavenger Hunt:

Have Chelsea look through her kitchen or pantry to find items from each food group. She can create a list and check off each item as she finds it. This will help her recognize healthy foods!

  • Color Your Plate:

Using her coloring materials, Chelsea can draw a plate and fill it with healthy food choices from each food group. Encourage her to use bright colors and be creative!

  • Healthy Meal Planning:

On a blank piece of paper, Chelsea can create a meal plan for one day. She should include breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a snack, making sure to use foods from different food groups.

  • Nutrition Quiz Game:

Set a timer and ask Chelsea fun questions about nutrition and health from her workbook. Each correct answer earns her a point, and she can aim for a certain score!
