Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic concepts of elections, including how they work, the importance of voting, and the roles of different officials. The student will also engage in fun activities that simulate the election process, helping them grasp the significance of participating in democracy.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or markers
  • Index cards
  • Access to a timer or stopwatch
  • Space to set up a mock voting booth
  • Basic knowledge of local government and elections (research beforehand to share with the student)

Activities

  • Election Role-Play:

The student will take on different roles within an election, such as a candidate, voter, and election official. They can create a mini-campaign for a made-up position, complete with posters and speeches.

  • Mock Voting Booth:

Set up a mock voting booth where the student can cast their vote on fun topics (like favorite ice cream flavor). They will learn how to properly fill out a ballot and understand the voting process.

  • Debate Time:

The student will pair up with a family member to debate two fun topics (like cats vs. dogs). This will help them understand how candidates present their ideas and how to listen to opposing views.

  • Election Day Countdown:

Using a timer, the student will learn about the importance of being prepared for Election Day by counting down the steps they need to take to vote, just like real voters do!

Talking Points

  • "An election is like a big decision-making party where everyone gets to choose who they want to help make the rules!"
  • "Voting is important because it’s our chance to share our opinions and have a say in what happens in our community!"
  • "Candidates are people who want to be elected to help make decisions. They tell us their ideas to convince us to vote for them!"
  • "In a real election, people have to follow rules to make sure everything is fair and everyone gets a chance to vote!"
  • "After we vote, the votes are counted, and the person with the most votes wins! It’s like a race to see who gets to help make important choices!"
