Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a deeper understanding of chapters 4-6 of "Anne of Green Gables," including character development, themes of imagination, and the significance of friendship. The student will engage in creative activities that enhance their comprehension and appreciation of the text.

Materials and Prep

  • Copy of "Anne of Green Gables" (chapters 4-6)
  • Pencil and paper for notes and drawings
  • Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, or crayons)
  • Access to a quiet space for reading and activities
  • Optional: Access to nature for a walk or outdoor activity

Before the lesson, ensure the student has read chapters 4-6 and is familiar with the main characters introduced in these chapters, particularly Anne, Marilla, and Diana.

Activities

  • Character Sketch:

The student will create a character sketch of Anne, focusing on her personality traits, dreams, and how she interacts with Marilla and Diana. Encourage the student to include quotes from the text that illustrate Anne's character.

  • Imaginative Writing:

Ask the student to write a short story or diary entry from Anne's perspective about a day in her life at Green Gables. They should incorporate her imaginative nature and how she views the world around her.

  • Friendship Collage:

The student will create a collage that represents the theme of friendship as seen in these chapters. They can use drawings, magazine cutouts, or words that express what friendship means to Anne and her relationship with Diana.

  • Nature Walk:

If possible, take a nature walk inspired by Anne's love for the outdoors. During the walk, the student can collect small items (leaves, flowers) and discuss how Anne might describe these elements of nature in her imaginative way.

Talking Points

  • "In these chapters, how does Anne's imagination shape her experiences at Green Gables?"
  • "Can you find a quote that shows Anne's unique view of the world? What does it tell us about her character?"
  • "How does Anne's relationship with Marilla evolve in these chapters? What are some key moments that illustrate this?"
  • "What role does Diana play in Anne's life? How does their friendship affect Anne's happiness?"
  • "What lessons can we learn from Anne's experiences in these chapters? How can we apply them to our own lives?"
