Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and understand the key elements of a short story, including character, setting, plot, conflict, and theme. The student will also create their own short story using these elements.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil for writing
- A quiet space for reading and writing
- Optional: A timer for writing exercises
- Basic knowledge of what a story is (e.g., a sequence of events involving characters)
Activities
-
Element Exploration:
Start by discussing each element of a short story. Write down examples of each element from a favorite book or movie. This helps the student relate to the concepts through familiar stories.
-
Character Creation:
The student will create their own character by filling out a character sheet that includes name, age, personality traits, and background story. This encourages creativity and personal investment in their story.
-
Setting Sketch:
Ask the student to draw or describe the setting where their story takes place. This can include the time period, location, and atmosphere, helping them visualize their story's world.
-
Plot Development:
Guide the student to outline the main events of their story using a simple plot structure (beginning, middle, end). This ensures they understand how to build a narrative arc effectively.
-
Write Your Short Story:
Using the elements discussed, have the student write their own short story. Encourage them to incorporate all the elements we've covered and to let their imagination flow!

- "The setting is where and when your story takes place. Can you picture it in your mind?"
- "Plot is the sequence of events. What happens first, next, and last in your story?"
- "Conflict drives the story forward. What challenges will your characters face?"
- "Finally, the theme is the underlying message. What do you want your readers to learn or feel?"
- "Now, let’s put it all together and create your own short story. Remember to have fun with it!"
