Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different colors, understand basic color mixing, and create their own colorful artwork using only their imagination.

Materials and Prep

  • Basic color chart (drawn or printed)
  • White paper
  • Colorful crayons or markers
  • Water (for mixing colors, if applicable)

Before the lesson, it may be helpful to familiarize the student with the primary colors: red, blue, and yellow, and explain that mixing these colors can create new colors!

Activities

  • Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find objects that match the colors on the color chart. This will help them learn to identify colors in their environment.

  • Color Mixing Fun: Using water and food coloring (if available), show the student how to mix primary colors to create secondary colors. For example, mix red and blue to make purple. If only crayons or markers are available, they can use their imagination to mix colors on paper.

  • Colorful Creations: Give the student white paper and colorful crayons or markers. Encourage them to draw a picture using as many colors as they can. Ask them to name the colors they are using as they create their artwork.

Talking Points

  • "Look at this color chart! Can you find something in the room that is red?"
  • "When we mix red and blue together, what color do we get? That's right, purple!"
  • "Wow, your drawing is so colorful! What colors are you using?"
  • "Did you know that colors can make us feel different things? What does the color yellow make you feel?"
