Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the concept of numbers and counting up to 10 through engaging activities and play. They will learn to recognize numbers and practice counting objects in a fun and interactive way.

Materials and Prep

  • Fingers (for counting)
  • Everyday objects around the house (like toys, fruits, or blocks)
  • Space to move around and play

Before the lesson, ensure that the area is safe and clear for activities. Gather a variety of small objects that can be counted easily.

Activities

  1. Finger Counting: Start with using fingers to count from 1 to 10. Encourage the student to hold up the correct number of fingers as you say each number. This helps them connect numbers with quantities.

  2. Object Counting: Choose a few objects from around the house (like toys or fruits) and ask the student to count them out loud. For example, if they have 5 blocks, they can say, "1, 2, 3, 4, 5!" as they point to each block.

  3. Number Hunt: Hide numbers (you can draw them on paper) around the room. Ask the student to find them and say the number out loud when they do. This combines movement with learning!

  4. Counting Songs: Sing a simple counting song together, like "Five Little Ducks" or "Ten in the Bed." This makes counting fun and memorable through music.

Talking Points

  • "Look at your fingers! Can you show me 3 fingers? Great job!"
  • "Let's count these blocks together! How many do you see? Can you say the numbers out loud?"
  • "Can you find the number 4 hidden in the room? What number is it? Yes, it's 4!"
  • "Let’s sing our counting song! How many ducks do you think we will have at the end?"
