Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic concepts of shapes and their properties. They will be able to identify different shapes in their environment and describe their characteristics.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or colored pencils
- Scissors (with adult supervision)
- Glue
- Shapes flashcards (can be homemade)
Before the lesson, prepare flashcards with different shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, etc.) and ensure the student has enough space to work on their activities.
Activities
- Shape Hunt:
Take a short walk around your home or yard and look for different shapes in everyday objects. Ask the student to point out objects that match the shapes on the flashcards.
- Shape Art:
Using the paper and crayons, have the student draw their favorite shapes. After they finish, they can cut them out and create a collage by gluing the shapes onto another piece of paper.
- Shape Sorting:
Using the flashcards, ask the student to sort them into groups based on their characteristics (e.g., all circles in one pile, all squares in another). Discuss why they sorted them that way.
Talking Points
- "What shape is this? Can you find something in our house that looks like a circle?"
- "A square has 4 equal sides. Can you count the sides of this shape?"
- "Triangles have 3 sides. Can you make a triangle with your hands?"
- "Let's look for shapes outside! What shapes do you see in nature?"
- "Great job sorting! Why did you put those shapes together?"
