Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and name different colors and shapes through engaging activities that enhance their recognition skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Colorful paper or fabric scraps
  • Basic shapes cut out of paper (circle, square, triangle, etc.)
  • Markers or crayons
  • Space to play and explore

Before the lesson, ensure the area is safe for exploration and that the materials are within reach of the student. Familiarize yourself with the basic colors and shapes to facilitate discussions.

Activities

  • Color Hunt:

Go on a color hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find objects that match specific colors you call out, such as "Can you find something red?"

  • Shape Sorting:

Using the cut-out shapes, encourage the student to sort them into groups based on their shape. You can say, "Let's put all the circles together!"

  • Art Time:

Give the student markers or crayons and let them draw their favorite colors and shapes. You can prompt them by saying, "What color are you using? Can you draw a circle?"

Talking Points

  • "Look at this red paper! Red is a bright color. Can you say red?"
  • "This is a circle! Circles are round. Can you find something round?"
  • "Great job finding all those colors! You are a color detective!"
  • "Let's count how many triangles we have. One, two, three triangles!"
  • "What shape do you see here? Yes, it's a square! Squares have four sides!"
