Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and name different colors, understand the concept of primary colors, and create their own colorful artwork using these colors.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • Water (for a fun color mixing activity)
  • Small containers (for mixing colors)

Before the lesson, make sure to gather all materials and find a comfortable, clean space for the activities. You may also want to review the names of the primary colors: red, blue, and yellow.

Activities

  • Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find objects of different colors. For example, "Can you find something red?" This will help them recognize colors in their environment.

  • Color Mixing: Use small containers filled with water. Add a few drops of food coloring (if available) to show how colors mix. Ask the student, "What happens when we mix blue and yellow?" This will introduce them to the concept of secondary colors.

  • Colorful Art: Give the student paper and crayons or colored pencils. Encourage them to draw a picture using as many colors as they can. You can say, "Let’s make a rainbow!" This will allow them to express their creativity while practicing color recognition.

Talking Points

  • "What color is this? Can you say it out loud?"
  • "Do you remember what happens when we mix red and yellow? Let’s find out!"
  • "Look at all the colors you used! What’s your favorite one?"
  • "Colors are everywhere! Can you find something blue in the room?"
