Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the basic concept of shapes, identify common shapes in their environment, and create their own fun shape art using their imagination!

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • Scissors (with adult supervision)
  • Glue (optional)

Before the lesson, make sure to discuss with the student what shapes they already know, like circles, squares, and triangles. Prepare a space where the student can comfortably draw and create.

Activities

  • Shape Hunt:

Go on a shape hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find items that match different shapes, like a round ball (circle) or a book (rectangle).

  • Shape Drawing:

Using crayons or markers, encourage the student to draw their favorite shapes. They can color them in and even give them funny faces!

  • Shape Collage:

Help the student cut out shapes from the paper (with supervision) and glue them onto a larger piece of paper to create a fun shape collage.

Talking Points

  • "What shape is this? Can you find something that looks like a circle?"
  • "Look at all the fun shapes we can make! What color do you want to use for your square?"
  • "Let’s glue these shapes together! Can you tell me what shapes you are using?"
  • "Shapes are everywhere! Can you see a shape outside? What do you see?"
