Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and name different colors in their environment, as well as understand the concept of mixing primary colors to create new colors.

Materials and Prep

  • Colorful objects from around the house (toys, clothes, books)
  • Paper or a flat surface to mix colors
  • Hands (for mixing and exploring!)

Before starting the lesson, make sure to gather a variety of colorful items that the student can easily access. You can also prepare a space where they can mix colors using their hands.

Activities

  • Color Hunt:

Go on a color hunt around the house! Ask the student to find objects of different colors. For example, "Can you find something red?" This is a fun way to explore and identify colors in their environment.

  • Color Mixing:

Using their hands, the student can mix primary colors (red, blue, yellow) together to see what new colors they can create. Encourage them to explore and say, "What happens when we mix red and blue?"

  • Color Storytime:

Read a short story that emphasizes colors. As you read, pause to point out and name the colors in the illustrations. Ask the student questions like, "What color is the sky in this picture?"

Talking Points

  • "Look at all the colors around us! What color is that toy?"
  • "When we mix red and yellow, we get orange! Can you say orange?"
  • "Every color has a name! What is your favorite color?"
  • "Colors can change when we mix them! What color do you think we will get if we mix blue and yellow?"
