Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different colors, understand the concept of mixing colors, and create their own colorful artwork.
Materials and Prep
- Crayons or colored pencils
- White paper
- Water (for mixing, if applicable)
- A small container (for mixing colors, if applicable)
- Optional: A color wheel or color chart (if available)
Before the lesson, make sure to gather all the materials in a comfortable space for the student to work. You may want to introduce the basic colors: red, blue, yellow, green, orange, and purple.
Activities
-
Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find objects of different colors and name them as they go. This helps reinforce color recognition in a fun and interactive way.
-
Mixing Colors: If you have water, use it to mix primary colors (red, blue, yellow) in a small container to create secondary colors (green, orange, purple). Explain how mixing colors can create new ones!
-
Colorful Drawing: Give the student a piece of white paper and crayons. Encourage them to draw anything they like but to use as many different colors as possible. Ask them to tell you about their artwork.
-
Color Songs: Sing a simple song about colors together. You can make up a tune or use a familiar melody and change the words to include different colors.
Talking Points
- "What color is this? Can you find something else that is the same color?"
- "When we mix red and blue, what color do we get? Let’s see if we can make purple!"
- "Look at all the colors you used in your drawing! What is your favorite color?"
- "Can you sing the color song with me? Let’s make it fun!"
