Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different colors, understand the concept of mixing colors, and create a simple color wheel using their imagination.

Materials and Prep

  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • White paper
  • Water (for mixing colors if using washable markers)
  • Optional: A small container for mixing colors

Before the lesson, make sure to explain what colors are and how they can be mixed to create new colors. You can also show examples of colors in nature or in toys around the house.

Activities

  • Color Hunt: Go around the house or outside and find objects of different colors. The student can collect them and categorize them by color. This will help them learn to identify colors in their environment.

  • Color Mixing: Using crayons or washable markers, the student can experiment with mixing colors. For example, they can draw with yellow and then overlay blue to see what new color they create. If using water, they can mix primary colors in a container to see the new colors form.

  • Create a Color Wheel: On a piece of white paper, the student can draw a big circle and divide it into sections for different colors. They can color each section with their favorite colors and label them. This will help them visualize how colors relate to each other.

Talking Points

  • "What color is this? Can you find something in the room that is the same color?"
  • "When we mix blue and yellow, what color do we get? Let's try it together!"
  • "Look at your color wheel! Can you tell me what colors you used? Which one is your favorite?"
  • "Colors are everywhere! Can you name a color you see outside the window?"
