Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and name different colors in their environment, as well as understand the basic concept of how colors mix to create new colors.
Materials and Prep
- No materials are required for this lesson, just your imagination and observation skills!
- Before the lesson, make sure to walk around your home and yard to spot different colors in everyday objects.
Activities
-
Color Hunt:
Go on a color hunt around the house or yard! Ask the student to find items of specific colors, like something red, blue, or yellow. Make it a game and see how many colors they can find!
-
Color Mixing Fun:
Using imaginary paints, talk about mixing colors. For example, say, "What happens if we mix red and yellow? Yes! We get orange!" Encourage the student to use their hands to 'mix' colors in the air.
-
Color Story Time:
Read a short story or make one up that involves colors. For example, "Once upon a time, a bluebird met a green frog. Together, they found a rainbow!" Ask the student to point out colors in the story.
Talking Points
- "Look around! What colors do you see? Can you point to something that is red?"
- "Did you know that when we mix blue and yellow, we make green? Let's pretend to mix them!"
- "What is your favorite color? Why do you like it? Is it bright or dark?"
- "Colors can make us feel different things! What does the color blue make you feel?"
