Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic concepts of shapes, their properties, and how to identify them in everyday objects. The student will also engage in creative activities that reinforce their learning through play and exploration.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Colored pencils or crayons
- Scissors
- Glue
- Everyday objects (like toys, books, etc.) for shape identification
Before the lesson, gather various everyday objects that represent different shapes. Prepare a small area where the student can work on their art activities comfortably.
Activities
-
Shape Hunt
Take a walk around the house or yard and look for objects that match different shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle). The student can draw or write down the shapes they find.
-
Shape Art
Using paper and colored pencils or crayons, the student can create a "shape collage." They will cut out different shapes and glue them onto a larger piece of paper to create a unique piece of art.
-
Shape Storytime
Encourage the student to create a short story featuring characters that are different shapes. They can illustrate their story with their shape art and share it with family members.
Talking Points
- "What shape is this object? Can you find something else that looks the same?"
- "How many sides does a triangle have? Can you draw one?"
- "Let's count the corners of a square together. How many do you see?"
- "Shapes are all around us! Can you think of a shape you see every day?"
- "Why do you think shapes are important in art and design?"
