Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different colors, understand basic color mixing, and create a colorful artwork using their knowledge of colors.

Materials and Prep

  • Colored crayons or markers
  • White paper
  • Water and a small container (for mixing colors if using watercolors)
  • Optional: A color wheel (can be drawn on paper)

Before the lesson, make sure to have a clean workspace ready for coloring and mixing. If using watercolors, prepare a small amount of water in a container.

Activities

  • Color Hunt:

Go on a color hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find objects of specific colors (e.g., "Can you find something red?"). This will help them recognize colors in their environment.

  • Color Mixing Fun:

Using crayons or watercolors, show the student how to mix two colors to make a new one. For example, mix red and blue to create purple. Let them experiment with mixing colors on paper.

  • Colorful Artwork:

Encourage the student to create a colorful drawing or painting. They can use their favorite colors and try to incorporate the new colors they learned through mixing.

  • Color Storytime:

Read a short story or poem that emphasizes colors. Ask the student to point out the colors they see in the illustrations and discuss them.

Talking Points

  • "What color is this? Can you find something else that is the same color?"
  • "When we mix red and blue, what color do we get? Let’s try it together!"
  • "Look at your artwork! What colors did you use? Do you like them?"
  • "Can you tell me a story about your favorite color? What makes it special?"
