Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different colors, as well as understand the concept of mixing colors to create new ones. They will have fun exploring colors through interactive activities!
Materials and Prep
- Colorful objects (toys, clothing, or household items)
- Paper and crayons or markers
- Water (for mixing colors, if desired)
- Optional: A white plate or shallow dish for mixing colors
Before the lesson, gather a variety of colorful objects from around the house. Make sure to have a selection of crayons or markers in different colors ready for drawing.
Activities
-
Color Hunt:
Go on a color hunt around the house! Ask the student to find objects of a specific color. For example, say, "Can you find something red?" Celebrate each find!
-
Color Mixing:
If using water, show how to mix primary colors (red, blue, yellow) to make new colors. For example, mix red and blue to make purple. Say, "Look, we made purple! Isn't that cool?"
-
Color Drawing:
Encourage the student to draw a picture using their favorite colors. Ask them to tell you about their drawing. You can say, "What colors did you use? Why did you choose those colors?"
-
Rainbow Creation:
Using crayons or markers, help the student create a rainbow on paper. Explain the order of colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple) as they draw. Say, "Look at our beautiful rainbow!"
Talking Points
- "What color is this? Can you say it out loud?"
- "Did you know that when we mix red and yellow, we get orange? Let's try it!"
- "Look at all the colors in your drawing! What do you like best?"
- "Rainbows are made of many colors. Can you name them with me?"
