Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the concept of arrays by grouping objects in rows and columns, helping them to develop early math skills and recognize patterns.

Materials and Prep

  • Everyday objects (like toys, blocks, or snacks)
  • A flat surface to arrange the objects
  • Space to move around and have fun!

Before the lesson, make sure to gather a variety of small objects that can be grouped easily. Think about how many rows and columns you want to create together!

Activities

  • Object Grouping:

Gather a selection of toys or snacks and ask your child to help you arrange them into rows and columns. For example, you could say, "Let's make 3 rows with 2 toys in each row!"

  • Array Art:

Using the same objects, create a fun picture by arranging them in an array pattern. Ask your child, "What do you see? Can we make a flower with our toys?"

  • Array Counting:

Count the objects in each row together. For instance, say, "How many toys are in this row? Let's count them together!"

Talking Points

  • "Look! We can put our toys in a nice, neat line. This is called a row!"
  • "If we have 2 rows and 3 toys in each row, how many toys do we have all together?"
  • "Can you help me make a big square with these blocks? That’s an array!"
  • "Arrays help us see how things are organized. Isn’t it fun to group them like this?"
