Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the concept of colors and be able to identify and name at least five different colors in their environment.

Materials and Prep

  • No specific materials needed, just a willingness to explore colors!
  • Prepare the environment by ensuring there are various colored objects around the house.
  • Be ready to encourage and ask questions throughout the activities.

Activities

  • Color Hunt: Go on a mini-adventure around the house to find objects of different colors. Ask the student to point out and name the colors they see.

  • Color Sorting Game: Gather a few colored objects (toys, books, etc.) and have the student sort them into groups based on their color. This can be done on the floor or a table.

  • Color Drawing: Encourage the student to draw a picture using crayons or markers of their favorite colors. Talk about the colors they are using as they create.

  • Color Dance Party: Play some music and dance! Every time the music stops, call out a color and have the student freeze and point to something in the room that is that color.

Talking Points

  • "Look at that! What color is that object?"
  • "Can you find something else that is the same color?"
  • "What do you think your favorite color is? Why do you like it?"
  • "Let’s count how many things we found that are red/blue/yellow!"
  • "When we mix colors, what do you think will happen? Can you guess?"
