Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and name different colors and shapes through fun and engaging activities, enhancing their observational skills and creativity.

Materials and Prep

  • Colorful paper or cardboard (if available)
  • Crayons or markers (if available)
  • Small toys or objects of various shapes
  • Space to move around for activities

Before the lesson, ensure the area is safe for movement and that the student is comfortable with exploring colors and shapes. You can also prepare some examples of shapes and colors to show during the lesson.

Activities

  • Color Hunt:

Go on a scavenger hunt around the house or yard to find objects of different colors. Ask the student to bring back one object of each color.

  • Shape Sorting:

Use small toys or objects to sort them by shape. Create a fun game by racing against a timer to see how many shapes can be sorted in a minute!

  • Art Time:

Using crayons or markers, let the student draw their favorite colors and shapes. Encourage them to create a colorful picture that includes at least three different shapes.

  • Shape Dance:

Play some music and have the student dance while you call out different shapes. When a shape is called, they must make a pose that represents that shape!

Talking Points

  • "Can you find something red? Let's see what you can discover!"
  • "Look at this circle! Can you make a circle with your arms?"
  • "What color is your favorite? Let's use that color in our drawing!"
  • "Can you show me a triangle with your body? Let’s see you make that shape!"
