Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic concepts of shapes, including identifying, naming, and describing various shapes found in their environment.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Colored crayons or markers
- Scissors
- Glue
- Access to a safe outdoor or indoor space for shape hunting
Before the lesson, ensure the student knows some basic shapes like circle, square, triangle, and rectangle. Prepare a fun shape song or rhyme to introduce the topic.
Activities
-
Shape Hunt:
Take the student on a shape hunt around the house or yard. Ask them to find objects that match the shapes you discuss. For example, "Can you find something that is a circle?"
-
Shape Art:
Using the paper and crayons, have the student draw their favorite shapes and color them in. Encourage them to create a "shape collage" by cutting out shapes from paper and gluing them onto another sheet.
-
Shape Storytime:
Read a short story or create a story together that includes different shapes as characters. For example, "Once upon a time, a little triangle wanted to find a square friend!"
-
Shape Dance:
Make a fun dance where each movement represents a different shape. For example, spin around for a circle or make a triangle with your arms. This will help the student remember the shapes through movement!
Talking Points
- "What shape is this? Can you tell me what you see?"
- "How many sides does a triangle have? Let's count together!"
- "Can you think of something in our house that is a square?"
- "Shapes are all around us! Can you spot any shapes outside?"
- "Let's make our shape collage! What shape should we start with?"
- "Dancing is a fun way to remember shapes! Can you show me a circle with your body?"
