Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and identify the basic concepts of shapes and their properties, enhancing their spatial awareness and critical thinking skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Shape templates (can be drawn by hand)

Before the lesson, prepare some shape templates such as circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. Make sure to have a clear space for activities and a comfortable area for drawing and crafting.

Activities

  • Shape Hunt:

Take a walk around the house or yard and look for different shapes in everyday objects. Ask the student to point out circles, squares, and triangles they see.

  • Shape Art:

Using paper and colored pencils, have the student draw their favorite shapes and color them in. Then, ask them to cut out the shapes and create a collage.

  • Shape Sorting:

Gather various objects (toys, kitchen items, etc.) and have the student sort them into groups based on their shapes. Discuss why they grouped them that way.

  • Shape Story:

Encourage the student to create a short story using their shape drawings. They can use the shapes as characters or settings in their story.

Talking Points

  • "Look at this circle! Can you find something else that looks like this in our house?"
  • "What happens when we put two triangles together? Can you guess what shape we make?"
  • "Why do you think we use shapes in our art? How do they help us tell stories?"
  • "Great job sorting! What do you think makes these shapes different from each other?"
  • "Can you think of a fun adventure that our shape characters could go on?"
