Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the concept of basic addition through fun and engaging activities, helping them to recognize how numbers can combine to create new totals.

Materials and Prep

  • Two sets of colorful counting blocks (or any small items that can be counted)
  • A large piece of paper or cardboard
  • A marker or crayon
  • Optional: A small container for collecting items

Before the lesson, ensure the counting blocks are in good condition and that the student understands they can use their fingers to count as well.

Activities

  • Counting Blocks Adventure:

Start by giving the student a set number of counting blocks. Ask them to count how many they have, then add a few more blocks and count again. This will help them see how numbers grow when you add more!

  • Drawing the Fun:

On the large piece of paper, ask the student to draw their blocks. Encourage them to draw a certain number of blocks, then add more blocks to their drawing and count them together. This combines art with math!

  • Fun with Fingers:

Have the student use their fingers to show different numbers. For example, hold up 2 fingers, then add 3 more fingers, and ask them how many fingers they see all together. This makes counting interactive!

Talking Points

  • "Can you count how many blocks you have? Let's see!"
  • "If we have 2 blocks and we add 3 more, how many do we have now?"
  • "Drawing is fun! How many blocks will you draw? Let's count together!"
  • "Look at your fingers! If you hold up 1 finger and then 4 more, how many do we see together?"
