Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic concept of shapes, including circles, squares, and triangles. They will be able to identify these shapes in their environment and create their own shape art!

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • Scissors (if appropriate for the child)
  • Glue (if appropriate for the child)

Before the lesson, make sure to review the names of basic shapes. You may also want to take a quick walk around the house or yard to spot some shapes in everyday objects!

Activities

  • Shape Hunt: Go on a shape hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find objects that match the shapes you have discussed. For example, "Can you find something that looks like a circle?"

  • Shape Drawing: Give the student paper and crayons or markers. Ask them to draw different shapes. You can say, "Let's draw a big square! What color will you use?"

  • Shape Art Collage: If using scissors and glue is appropriate, help the student cut out shapes from colored paper. Then, they can glue them onto a larger piece of paper to create a fun shape collage!

Talking Points

  • "Look around! Can you find something that is a circle? What about a square?"
  • "Great job drawing that triangle! How many sides does it have?"
  • "Let’s count how many shapes we used in our collage. One, two, three...!"
  • "Shapes are everywhere! Can you think of a shape you see outside?"
