Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and name different colors, understand how colors mix to create new colors, and recognize colors in their environment. This will help them develop their observation skills and creativity!
Materials and Prep
- Colorful paper or fabric scraps
- Crayons or markers in various colors
- Water and a clear container (for mixing colors)
- A white paper for color mixing activity
- A small paintbrush or sponge (optional)
Before the lesson, gather all materials and find a comfortable space for activities. Make sure to have a towel handy for any spills during the color mixing activity!
Activities
-
Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find objects of different colors and bring them back. Talk about each color as they find them!
-
Color Mixing Fun: Using the water and clear container, demonstrate how to mix two colors together. For example, mix red and blue to make purple. Let the student try mixing colors themselves with supervision!
-
Crayon Creations: Using the crayons or markers, have the student draw a picture using at least three different colors. Encourage them to tell a story about their picture while they color!
-
Color Song and Dance: Sing a simple song about colors, like "I See Red" to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle." Encourage the student to dance and point to things of that color!
Talking Points
- "What color is this? Can you find something in the room that is the same color?"
- "When we mix blue and yellow, what color do we get? Let's find out!"
- "Look at your drawing! What colors did you use? Can you tell me a story about it?"
- "Can you sing along with me? I see red, I see blue, what colors do you see too?"
