Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different colors, understand the concept of mixing colors, and create their own colorful artwork using basic color mixing techniques.

Materials and Prep

  • White paper
  • Water (for rinsing hands)
  • A small container for mixing colors
  • Food coloring or washable paint (red, blue, yellow)
  • Paintbrush or fingers (for painting)
  • A towel or cloth (for cleaning up)

Before the lesson, prepare the workspace by covering the table with a cloth to protect it from spills. Make sure the student understands that mixing colors can be messy but is part of the fun!

Activities

  • Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find objects of different colors and name them. For example, "Can you find something red?" This helps them recognize colors in their environment.

  • Color Mixing Fun: Using the primary colors (red, blue, yellow), let the student mix them in the container to see what new colors they can create. For example, "What happens when we mix red and blue? Let's find out!"

  • Colorful Painting: Give the student the white paper and let them paint using the colors they mixed. Encourage them to create a colorful masterpiece. Say, "Use your favorite colors to make something beautiful!"

Talking Points

  • "Look at all the colors around us! Can you tell me what color this is?"
  • "When we mix colors together, we can make new colors! What do you think will happen when we mix blue and yellow?"
  • "Painting is so much fun! What colors do you want to use today?"
  • "Wow! Look at the beautiful colors you made! What do you want to call your artwork?"
