Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and name different shapes, understand their properties, and recognize shapes in their environment through fun activities and discussions.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • Scissors (if safe and appropriate for the child)
  • Glue (optional)
  • Shape templates (can be drawn or printed beforehand)

Before the lesson, make sure to create or gather some simple shape templates (like circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles) that the child can use for activities. Ensure a safe space for cutting and gluing if those activities will be included.

Activities

  • Shape Hunt: Go on a shape hunt around the house or yard! Look for objects that match the shapes you’ve learned. For example, find something round like a ball or something square like a book.

  • Shape Art: Use the paper and crayons to draw different shapes. Encourage the child to color them in and decorate them with patterns or faces!

  • Shape Collage: Cut out different shapes from paper (with help if needed) and glue them onto a larger piece of paper to create a fun collage. Talk about each shape as you work.

  • Shape Dance: Create a fun dance where each shape has a special move. For example, spin like a circle or stomp like a square! This will help them remember the shapes through movement.

Talking Points

  • "What shape is this? Let's find out! This is a circle, and it goes round and round!"
  • "Can you find something in the room that looks like a square? Great job!"
  • "Look at our shape art! What colors did you use? What shape do you like the best?"
  • "Let’s make a fun dance! When I say 'circle,' we spin, and when I say 'square,' we stomp! Ready?"
