Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic concept of colors, be able to identify and name primary colors (red, blue, yellow), and recognize these colors in their environment.

Materials and Prep

  • No special materials are needed.
  • Before starting the lesson, make sure to have a colorful space to explore, like a room with toys, books, or art supplies.
  • Be ready to go on a color hunt around the house or outside!

Activities

  • Color Hunt: Go around the house or yard and look for objects that are red, blue, and yellow. Ask the student to point out and name each color they find.

  • Color Mixing Fun: Using imaginary paint, pretend to mix colors together. Ask the student what happens when you mix red and blue or yellow and red.

  • Color Storytime: Read a short story or make up a story that includes lots of colors. Ask the student to say the colors they hear during the story.

  • Color Dance: Play music and dance around, but every time the music stops, call out a color. The student has to freeze and point to something of that color.

Talking Points

  • "Look at this red toy! Can you say red?"
  • "What color do you see on the wall? Is it blue or yellow?"
  • "If we mix red and yellow, what color do we get? Let's pretend to mix them!"
  • "Can you find something outside that is yellow? Let’s go on a color hunt!"
