Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different colors, as well as understand how colors can mix together to create new colors.
Materials and Prep
- Colorful crayons or markers
- White paper
- A clear container of water
- Food coloring or colored water (if available)
Before the lesson, make sure to gather all the materials and prepare a space where the student can comfortably draw and explore colors. Familiarize yourself with how colors mix together if using food coloring.
Activities
-
Color Exploration Drawing: Let the student use crayons or markers to draw anything they like. Encourage them to use as many colors as possible and ask them to name the colors they are using.
-
Mixing Colors Experiment: If using food coloring, show the student how to mix two colors in the clear container of water to create a new color. For example, mix red and blue to make purple!
-
Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around the house or outside. Ask the student to find objects of specific colors and bring them back to share.
Talking Points
- "Can you tell me what color this crayon is? Let's say it together!"
- "Look what happens when we mix these two colors! What color do you see now?"
- "Can you find something red in the room? How about something blue?"
- "Colors can be fun! What is your favorite color and why?"
