Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a basic understanding of patterns and sequences through fun and engaging activities that encourage creativity and critical thinking.

Materials and Prep

  • No specific materials are required for this lesson.
  • Prepare to use your imagination and creativity!
  • Be ready to explore patterns using your body, voice, and everyday objects in your environment.

Activities

  • Body Patterns: The student will create patterns using their body by clapping, stomping, and jumping. For example, they can create a pattern like clap, stomp, clap, stomp!

  • Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around the house or yard. The student will find items of different colors and arrange them in a pattern (e.g., red, blue, red, blue).

  • Story Time Patterns: Read a short story and identify any patterns in the story, such as repeated phrases or rhymes. Discuss how these patterns make the story fun.

  • Sound Patterns: Create sound patterns using their voice. For example, they can say "la, la, la, la" and then change it to "la, la, la, boo!" and see if they can repeat it.

Talking Points

  • "Can you clap your hands in a pattern? Let's try it together!"
  • "Look at all these colors! Can we make a pattern with them? What comes next?"
  • "Did you hear that word again in the story? That's a pattern! Patterns can be in stories too!"
  • "Can you make a funny sound pattern? Let's see if we can remember it!"
