Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different colors and shapes found in everyday objects around them.
Materials and Prep
- Colorful paper or cardboard cutouts of basic shapes (circle, square, triangle)
- Crayons or markers
- Everyday objects from around the house (toys, books, kitchen items)
- A camera or smartphone (optional, for taking pictures of objects)
Before the lesson, prepare the cutouts and gather various colorful objects to use in activities.
Activities
-
Shape Hunt
Go on a shape hunt around the house! Ask the student to find objects that match the shapes you have cut out. For example, "Can you find something that looks like a circle?"
-
Color Matching
Using the colorful paper cutouts, ask the student to match real objects to the colors. For example, "Can you find something red to match this red paper?"
-
Art Time
Let the student use crayons or markers to draw their favorite shape and color. Encourage them to say, "I made a blue triangle!"
-
Picture Time
If you have a camera, take pictures of the objects they find. Later, look at the pictures together and talk about the colors and shapes!
Talking Points
- "What color is this? Can you say it out loud?"
- "Look at this shape! Is it a circle, square, or triangle?"
- "Let’s find something in the room that is the same color as this!"
- "Can you draw a shape? What color will you use?"
- "Great job! You found so many shapes and colors today!"
