Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the basic concept of shapes, identify them in their environment, and create simple shapes using their own hands and imagination.

Materials and Prep

  • No special materials are needed for this lesson.
  • Make sure the area is safe for movement and exploration.
  • Be prepared to guide the student in identifying shapes around the house.

Activities

  • Shape Hunt: Go on a shape hunt around the house! Ask the student to find items that match different shapes like circles, squares, and triangles. Encourage them to describe the items they find.

  • Shape Drawing: Using their finger, have the student draw shapes in the air or on a surface. You can also encourage them to draw shapes in the sand if outside.

  • Shape Stories: Create a fun story using different shapes. For example, "Once there was a big circle who wanted to be a square!" Encourage the student to add their own ideas to the story.

  • Shape Dance: Make a fun dance where every time you say a shape, the student has to make a pose that looks like that shape. For example, a triangle pose can be standing on one leg with arms up!

Talking Points

  • "Can you find something that looks like a circle? What is it?"
  • "Let's draw a big square in the air together! Can you show me how?"
  • "What do you think happens in our story? Can the shapes be friends?"
  • "Can you show me a triangle with your body? Let's make a shape dance!"
