By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and name different colors, as well as understand the concept of mixing colors to create new ones.

Materials and Prep

  • Colorful objects (toys, clothes, etc.)
  • Paper (any color)
  • Crayons or markers (any colors)
  • Water (for mixing colors, if applicable)

Before the lesson, gather various colorful objects around the house to use as examples. Make sure the student can easily access the crayons and paper.

Activities

  • Color Hunt: Go on a treasure hunt around the house to find objects of different colors. Ask the student to name each color as they find it!

  • Color Mixing Fun: Use crayons or markers to mix colors on paper. Show how combining colors can create new ones, like blue and yellow making green!

  • Color Dance Party: Play some music and have a dance party where the student can jump around and shout out colors as they see them in the room.

  • Color Storytime: Read a story that features different colors and pause to point out and discuss the colors in the illustrations.

Talking Points

  • "What color is this? Can you find something else that is the same color?"
  • "Look! When we mix blue and yellow, we get green! Isn’t that cool?"
  • "Can you dance like your favorite color? Show me how!"
  • "Let’s look at the pictures in this book. What colors do you see? Can you name them?"
