Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and name different colors and understand how colors can mix to create new ones.

Materials and Prep

  • Colorful objects (toys, clothes, or other items around the house)
  • Blank paper or cardboard
  • Crayons or markers (if available)
  • Water (for mixing colors, if safe to do so)
  • A small container for mixing colors

Before the lesson, gather colorful objects from around the house and ensure that the mixing of colors with water is safe and supervised.

Activities

  • Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around the house! Ask your child to find objects of different colors. For example, "Can you find something red?" This will help them learn to identify colors in their environment.

  • Color Mixing: Use the small container to mix water with different colors (if using food coloring or washable paints). Let your child see what happens when you mix blue and yellow to make green. Encourage them to guess what new colors will appear!

  • Color Art: Using the blank paper and crayons or markers, have your child draw their favorite colorful scene. Ask them to use as many colors as they can and talk about what each color represents in their drawing.

Talking Points

  • "What color is this? Can you say it out loud?"
  • "Look! When we mix blue and yellow, we get green! Isn’t that cool?"
  • "Can you tell me what your favorite color is? Why do you like it?"
  • "Let’s count how many colors we have in our drawing! One, two, three...!"
