Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and understand the concept of shapes, including circles, squares, and triangles, through fun activities and discussions.

Materials and Prep

  • No additional materials are needed for this lesson.
  • Prepare a comfortable space for activities and discussions.
  • Be ready to engage and encourage the student's curiosity about shapes.

Activities

  • Shape Hunt: Go on a shape hunt around the house or yard. Look for objects that are circles, squares, or triangles. Ask the student to point them out and name the shapes they see.

  • Shape Drawing: Have the student draw their favorite shapes using their fingers in the air or on a surface. Encourage them to make big shapes and small shapes, and to talk about how each shape looks.

  • Shape Songs: Sing songs about shapes together. Use simple tunes and make up lyrics that mention the names of the shapes and what they look like. This will help reinforce their learning in a fun way.

  • Shape Stories: Create a short story together that involves different shapes. For example, "Once upon a time, a little circle went on an adventure to find a square friend!" This encourages creativity and understanding of shapes.

Talking Points

  • "Look! What shape is that? Can you find something else that looks like it?"
  • "Great job drawing! Can you tell me what makes a triangle a triangle?"
  • "Let’s sing our shape song! Can you clap your hands when we say 'circle'?"
  • "What do you think happens in our story next? Can our circle make a new friend?"
