Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the concept of addition and be able to solve simple addition problems using fun, interactive activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Counting blocks or any small objects (like buttons or coins)
  • Paper and crayons for drawing
  • A whiteboard or large sheet of paper for writing
  • Fun stickers for rewards
  • Some space to move around for activities

Before the lesson, ensure the area is clear for activities and gather all materials. Familiarize yourself with simple addition concepts.

Activities

  • Counting Blocks: Use the counting blocks to demonstrate simple addition. Start with a small number of blocks and add more, counting them together.
  • Draw and Add: Let the student draw pictures of objects (like apples or stars) and then add them together. For example, draw 2 apples, then add 3 more, and count how many there are in total.
  • Sticker Addition Game: Use stickers to represent numbers. For instance, if you have 4 star stickers and add 2 more, count them together to find the total.
  • Movement Activity: Create a fun game where the student jumps in place for each number you say. For example, “Jump 3 times, then jump 2 more times! How many jumps did you do?”

Talking Points

  • “When we add, we put things together! Can you show me with your blocks?”
  • “Let’s count how many we have! If we have 2 apples and we add 3 more, how many do we have?”
  • “Look at our stickers! If we have 4 stars and we add 2 more, let’s count them together!”
  • “Jumping is fun! If you jump 3 times and then 2 more times, how many jumps did you make?”
