Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and identify different shapes, as well as recognize their characteristics through fun activities and discussions.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper (any color)
  • Crayons or markers
  • Scissors (for adult use only)
  • Glue (optional)
  • Space to move around for activities

Before the lesson, review basic shapes such as circle, square, triangle, and rectangle. Prepare a few examples of shapes using paper if possible.

Activities

  • Shape Hunt:

Go on a shape hunt around the house or yard! Ask the student to look for objects that match the shapes you discuss. For example, "Can you find something that is round like a circle?"

  • Shape Drawing:

Using paper and crayons, encourage the student to draw their favorite shapes. Ask them to color them in and talk about each shape as they draw. "What color is your square? How many sides does it have?"

  • Shape Collage:

With the help of an adult, cut out different shapes from paper. Then, glue them onto a larger piece of paper to create a fun shape collage. "Look at all the shapes we made! Can you count how many triangles are in our collage?"

  • Shape Dance:

Play some music and create a dance for each shape! For example, spin around for circles or make sharp movements for triangles. "Let's dance like a square! Can you move in straight lines?"

Talking Points

  • "What shape is this? Can you tell me its name?"
  • "How many sides does a triangle have? Let's count together!"
  • "Can you find something in the room that is shaped like a circle?"
  • "What color do you want to use for your square? Let's make it bright!"
