Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and understand basic addition concepts using fun and engaging activities. They will learn how to combine numbers to find a total and develop a positive attitude towards math.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and crayons or markers
  • Small toys or objects for counting (like blocks or buttons)
  • A comfortable space to sit and work
  • Familiarity with numbers 1-10

Activities

  • Counting Fun:

Gather 10 small toys or objects. Ask the student to count them one by one. Then, add a few more toys and ask, "How many do we have now?" This helps them practice addition in a hands-on way.

  • Crayon Math:

Draw a picture with crayons and create groups of objects (like 3 stars and 2 hearts). Ask the student to count each group and then combine them, saying, "How many stars and hearts do we have together?"

  • Story Time Addition:

Read a short story that includes characters or animals. As you read, pause and ask, "If we have 2 cats and 3 dogs, how many animals do we have?" This makes addition relatable and fun!

  • Nature Count:

Go outside and collect leaves or stones. Count them together and then add more to see how many you have in total. For example, "We have 5 leaves and we find 2 more. How many leaves do we have now?"

Talking Points

  • "When we add, we are putting things together! Like when we have 2 apples and we get 1 more, how many do we have?"
  • "Counting is like a game! Let's count our toys together and see how many we have!"
  • "Adding numbers is fun! It's like finding treasure! What happens when we find 3 more treasures?"
  • "Every time we add, we make a bigger number! Can you help me make a big number by adding these?"
