Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will learn about the fun world of letters and sounds, and how they come together to form words. We will explore some simple activities that help us recognize letters and understand their sounds!
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or markers
- Alphabet flashcards (if available)
- Access to a comfortable space to sit and play
Before the lesson, make sure the student is in a relaxed environment where they can focus and have fun. Set up a little art station with the paper and crayons ready to go!
Activities
-
Letter Art:
Using crayons or markers, the student will draw their favorite letters on the paper. Encourage them to decorate the letters with colors and patterns!
-
Sound Match:
If you have alphabet flashcards, show one letter at a time and ask the student to make the sound of that letter. You can also ask them to think of a word that starts with that letter!
-
Letter Hunt:
Go on a letter hunt around the house or outside. Look for things that start with the letters you’ve learned. For example, "What starts with 'A'? Look, an apple!"
Talking Points
- "What letter is this? Can you say it out loud?"
- "Every letter makes a special sound. Can you make that sound with me?"
- "Look at this letter! Can you find something around us that starts with this letter?"
- "Great job! Letters help us make words. Can you think of a word that starts with our letter?"
