Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a better understanding of basic math concepts, including addition and subtraction, through engaging and interactive activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil
  • Colorful markers or crayons
  • Everyday objects for counting (e.g., buttons, coins, or small toys)
  • Timer (optional for timed activities)

Before the lesson, ensure that the student has a quiet space to work and that all materials are gathered and ready to use.

Activities

  • Counting Treasure Hunt:

Hide small objects around the room and give the student clues to find them. Each time they find an object, they will count how many they have collected and write down the total.

  • Math Art:

Using the colorful markers or crayons, the student will create a drawing that includes groups of objects to represent addition and subtraction problems. For example, they could draw 5 apples and then cross out 2 to show the subtraction.

  • Timed Math Challenge:

Set a timer for 5 minutes and give the student simple addition and subtraction problems to solve. They can use the everyday objects to help them if needed. The goal is to complete as many problems as possible in the time limit.

Talking Points

  • "Can you show me how you counted the objects you found? Counting helps us understand how many we have!"
  • "When you drew your picture, what was the addition problem you created? Drawing can make math fun and easier to see!"
  • "How did you feel about the timed challenge? Remember, practice helps us get better at math!"
  • "What strategies did you use to solve the problems? It's great to find different ways to get to the answer!"
